Challenge
At Cemex, frontline superintendents play a critical role in driving production, safety, and maintenance every day. These technically skilled leaders are essential to keeping operations running smoothly and safely across job sites. As Cemex continues investing in leadership development, the company identified an opportunity to strengthen their superintendents’ communication skills, particularly when engaging their teams and senior leaders. The goal: build greater confidence and clarity to lead daily huddles effectively, hold one-on-one conversations that drive accountability and build trust, and present with impact in meetings with VPs and other senior executives.
Solution
In partnership with Cemex, we created a learning experience focused on building the core communication skills superintendents need to lead in high-pressure, high-impact situations. The program was designed to strengthen how leaders structure and deliver their message, communicate with clarity under pressure, and engage others with confidence and presence. It introduced practical tools to help leaders prepare for high-stakes conversations, give effective feedback, navigate difficult discussions, and use storytelling techniques to connect with their teams and motivate action.
Built on the foundation of Speaking as a Leader® and enhanced with targeted Spark Learning Modules, the experience was tailored to the realities of frontline leadership and the moments where communication drives impact. Cemex called the program Speaking with Impact, a customized journey to equip superintendents with the skills to lead through communication.
Success
The transformation was immediate. Cemex’s superintendents became more confident, more compelling, and more effective communicators. Their energy, engagement, and enthusiasm stood out as some of the strongest our facilitators have ever seen. They embraced the training and walked away with a renewed sense of confidence in their communication.
Before the training, just 46% of participants rated themselves as able to speak with clarity in any interaction. After the program, that number jumped to 100%. Participants also reported:
