EMCO

Construction Industry | 1700+ Employees

EMCO Corporation is one of Canada's leading distributors of products for the construction industry, specializing in plumbing, HVAC, waterworks, and industrial systems. Founded more than a century ago, EMCO now has over 200 locations nationwide, and has built a strong reputation for delivering high-quality products, expert knowledge, and exceptional service to contractors, builders, and professional tradespeople.

Challenge

EMCO Corporation is committed to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace. The company actively promotes a discrimination-, harassment-, and barrier-free environment where all employees can thrive. EMCO also prioritizes attracting and developing a diverse pipeline of future leaders.

As is common in the construction industry, EMCO’s workforce has historically been male-dominated. Recognizing this, the company made inclusion a strategic priority, one that reflects its belief that diverse teams drive stronger performance, better culture, and long-term success. By fostering an inclusive work environment, EMCO aims to attract, engage, and retain talent from a wide range of backgrounds and lived experiences.

Solution

To support their goal of fostering an inclusive workplace, EMCO recognized that real change starts with the leaders on the ground—its Profit Centre leaders. These leaders are uniquely positioned to shape team dynamics and create an environment where all employees feel respected, heard, and valued.

To equip these leaders with the mindset and skills to build inclusion in the workplace, EMCO partnered with The Humphrey Group to bring in our Inclusive Leadership program. This learning experience is designed to build the specific communication skills that drive inclusion. Through a blend of facilitated learning and practical exercises, their leaders strengthened their ability to recognize and interrupt unconscious bias in real time, use inclusive language, respond to difficult feedback and different perspectives, and adapt communication styles to engage diverse perspectives

By investing in the development of its Profit Centre Leaders, EMCO is building the leadership capacity required to cultivate a culture of respect, trust, and innovation.

Success

The impact of EMCO’s investment in fostering an inclusive work environment has been both measurable and meaningful.

As a result of their participation in Inclusive Leadership, Profit Centre Leaders have significantly strengthened their inclusive communication skills, with self-ratings showing an 83% improvement in their ability to respond to difficult feedback in an inclusive way.  One leader reflected on the transformation by saying they would now “have the courage to call others out when they are using exclusive language [and] work harder towards building a work culture where everyone feels seen and that they belong.”

Today, Inclusive Leadership is more than a training initiative at EMCO, it’s become a corporate standard. The company continues to expand the program to hundreds of Profit Centre Leaders nationwide, reinforcing its commitment to building a workplace where inclusion is not just valued, but practiced daily.
